How to disable the windows firewall through a domain Group Policy

This article walks through the steps of how to edit the Group Policy object to disable the Windows Firewall.

 

1.  Follow the steps in Community Article 5248 and add the Group Policy Object Editor to the MMC console.

 

2.  The Group Policy Object Wizard will launch.  By default it will be set to the Local Computer.  Browse to your domain using the browse button.

3.  In the console tree, open Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Network Connections as seen below.

 

Set "Prohibit use of Internet Connection Firewall on your DNS domain network" to Enabled

4.  In the MMC Console browse to Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Network Connections | Windows Firewall | Domain Profile.

 

Change the "Domain profile – Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections" to Disabled as shown below.

5.  In the MMC Console browse to Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Network Connections | Windows Firewall | Standard Profile.

 

Change the "Standard profile – Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections" to Disabled

These settings ensure that Windows Firewall is not used, whether the computers are connected to your organization network or not.
